Causes of production suspension or draining of basin
There are two types of traditional aeration equipments. One is surface aeration device and the other is bottom aeration device.
In bottom aeration system, the blower conveys the compressed air through the diffuser. It requires high power consumption to overcome the resistance of tiny holes on the diffusers in order to disperse the air to the liquid. The bubbles float vertically upward to the liquid surface and escape quickly before effective dispersion occurs. There are many shortcomings for bottom aeration systems, such as high energy consumption, high noise level, recurrent clogging, poor controllability and difficult replacement of quick-wear parts.
The surface aeration system has the following weak points. The aeration depth is shallow. The bottom of basin has low dissolved oxygen level and sludge accumulation. The aeration direction is not adjustable, which is easy to cause dead zones in basins. The air intake is sufficient yet the bubbles exist only in the upper part of the basin. The rotors splash the water and spray aerosols, resulting in air pollution in the surrounding environment.
The surface aeration devices introduced to China are suitable for basins or ditches which is less in 3 meters deep. However, the depth of most oxidation ditches ever built in China is 4 to 5 meters. This is the main reason of sludge accumulation and lack of DO in bottom of basin.
Low efficiency and high energy consumption become the disadvantages of bottom and surface aeration devices and form the bottleneck for the reduction of wastewater treatment costs. Moreover, some aeration equipment must be replaced after production suspension of the plant. These problems shall bring great stress to the retrofit and update of small and medium-sized WWTP. The operation suspension shall cause ecological disaster to the environment and bring huge economic losses to the plant owners.
